Grill Girl
Genre Cover by Ashani Lillie
Why is this piece your Trace Fossil?
“This piece is meant to convey the metaphorical weight of feeling of not knowing how to express your identity within a community. The milk carton is a metaphor for a missing feeling of my identity, it's an image of my Cuban mother trying her best to braid my hair. The beans surrounding the figure are a representation of the food that I eat that belongs to both of my cultures and seamlessly melds the multifaceted dimensions of dual heritage. I had a screen printed onto the piece and layered tissue paper to show a layering of the cultures.”
